Virgin Books and Gotham Entertainment's Virgin Comics will close its New York offices and reorganize its operations due to "the current macro-economic turndown." CEO Sharad Devarajan and president Suresh Seetharaman hope to restructure and consolidate operations in Los Angeles.
Japanese publishers Shogakukan and Shueisha will join forces to directly publish manga in Europe starting in the fall of 2009. The two companies plan to publish in France first, and then expand to Great Britain, Spain, and the other European countries.

“VIZ Pictures, an affiliate of Viz Media, LLC that focuses on Japanese live-action film distribution, has announced the Canadian theatrical debut of the live-action DEATH NOTE feature film, based on the wildly successful manga and animated series. The DEATH NOTE feature film will screen as a special event in approximately 60 Cineplex Entertainment and Empire Theatres locations across Canada on Monday, September 15 at 9:00pm local time.”

TV News...
ABC has picked up Rob Thomas' remake of his '90s show Cupid for midseason.
Fox.com will simultaneously stream the series premiere of Fringe (September 9) and the season premiere of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (September 8), but only for computers logging on from college based .edu domains. Behind the scenes footage, cast interviews, and music videos will also be offered. “The move is designed to expose the shows to college students, who are more likely to have computers than TVs in their dorm rooms and make up a key portion of the network's audience.”

Marvel has announced a deal with, Japanese animation studio, Madhouse for anime series featuring characters from Marvel’s stable of customers. It’ll start with four series spring 2010 on Japanese station ANIMAX. To appeal to Japanese audiences the characters “will be retrofitted with new looks and backstories that touch on local culture and Japanese history.” Here’s Marvel Iron Man beside Madhouse Iron Man.
Vin Diesel, "I'm directing an animated Hannibal that will serve as the prequel to the [live-action] film. So it's Hannibal as a boy. So it's like the boy and an elephant. It's for BET, actually, which will be great fun.” Diesel will be among the voice cast. Hannibal the Conqueror will premiere in 2009.
Michelle Rodriguez will reprise the character of Ana-Lucia in the fifth season of Lost. Most likely in the second episode.
Lawrence Fishburne will replace William Peterson on CSI. His character, a former pathologist turned college lecturer, will make his first appearance in the ninth episode of the upcoming ninth season.
Stargate Atlantis is done as a TV show after it finishes its fifth season next year, but it’ll find new life as a TV movie. The two hour unnamed project will air on SciFi Channel before hitting DVD. Co-creators Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper: "We're excited to tell Atlantis stories on a bigger canvas. The successes of the two original Stargate [direct-to-video] movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both SG-1 and Atlantis to remain vital as we expand the franchise."
But Stargate Universe will begin production early 2009 with Brad Wright and Robert Cooper as executive producers and writers. There’ll be a two hour movie first followed by hour long episodes starting in the summer. “After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by the Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion but never completed. What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never-ending mission as the Stargate Universe crew discovers that the ship is unable to return to Earth and that they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny. The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the Destiny's original mission.”

Movie News
Wall Street Journal has an article on Warner Brothers’ future, and their plans for DC properties.
Michael Stuhlberg and Richard Kind have been cast in the Coen brothers’ period black comedy A Serious Man. In 1967 a professor’s life starts falling apart when his wife decides to leave him and his brother won’t move out. Shooting starts in Minneapolis in September. Working Title will produce and Focus Features will distribute.
Mike Judge’s comedy Extract is about a flower extract factory owner and his streak of bad luck. Jason Bateman, Clifton Collins Jr., Mila Kunis, and Kristen Wiig have joined the cast with Ben Affleck in talks.
Dean Cain, Conrad Janis, Stephen Lunsford, Walter Phelan, Maximillian Roeg, and Lacy Phillips have been cast in Michael Emanuel’s directorial debut Maneater. A horror thriller, it’s about a former FBI profiler and a sheriff who investigate murders connected to a Native American legend.
Eric Stoltz, Kate Connor, Camryn Manheim, Lyndsy Fonseca, Seymour Cassell will star Michael Worth’s Fort McCoy. “Lensing in Wisconsin, the movie follows the Stirn family who lived in a cabin between the army base and the Nazi - Japanese P.O.W. Camp during World War II. The real Fort McCoy military base - During World War II, Camp McCoy was used as a training facility for units from across the United States that were preparing to enter combat - plays a central part in the film.”
Thomas Haden Church, Elisabeth Shue, Melissa Leo, M. Emmit Walsh, and Keith David are cast in Jake Goldberger’s indie drama Don McKay. The movie’s about “a man haunted by a tragedy that forced him to flee his hometown 25 years earlier who returns when he finds his long-lost love is dying -- and is then caught in a web of confusion, deceit and murder.”
Russell Crowe, "I have another project based on the life of comedian Bill Hicks, which is going from treatment to draft stage with Kiwi writer Mark Staufer."
Prequels, Sequels & Remakes
James Bond sequel Quantum of Solace has been pushed back from November 7 to November 14.

Juliet Snowden and Stiles White have been hired as the writers on the Poltergeist remake. They did Boogeyman. This is both depressing and insulting.
Don Mancini will be writing and directing the Child’s Play remake, "I think what we are mainly responding to, David [Kirschner] and I, is the will of the fans, which is really telling us that they want to see a scary Chucky movie again. They want to go back to the straightforward horror rather than the horror comedy." Will Brad Dourif be back? "Who would you get that’s better? If you could recast it, you would want the actor to sound kind of like it, but it would feel weird to just be completely different I think."
Irvine Welsh says he’s writing a prequel to the Trainspotting novel and is planning a sequel to the movie. Ewan McGregor will not be back since he is not a fan of the sequel.
Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens have completed their deals and started writing on The Hobbit with del Toro. Shooting will start fall 2009 in New Zealand.
Jon Favreau says about Iron Man, “We're working on it now, which hasn't been officially announced. It will be released in 2010.”
Tyrese Gibson is off Fast and Furious 4, due to scheduling conflicts with Transformers 2. Speaking of Fast and Furious, Vin Diesel says he’ll be directing a 20 minute prequel to the franchise. It’ll star Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sung Kang, and link the first and fourth movies together.
Mitch Klebanoff has written and will direct a Beverly Hills Ninja sequel, Tokyo Jones : The Legend of the Dancing Ninja. “Caucasian but raised by an Asian family after a mix-up at sea when he was a baby, Ikki grows up knowing that he's different from those around him, but also quite confident he is a ninja and not just any ninja, but the legendary Dancing Ninja. Ikki gets to prove himself when his beloved Sensei is murdered and Ikki goes to Hollywood to track down his killer, the evil action movie superstar Ansel LaDouche.” Filming starts in L.A. and Korea in September.
Adaptations
Fox Is Allowed to Press Warner Over Rights to ‘Watchmen.’ Uh-oh.
Sam Raimi is putting together an adaptation of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ graphic novel Sleeper for Warner Brothers. About an operative who’s fused with an alien artifact that goes undercover into a villainous organization, it’ll star Tom Cruise (at least he’s in on it this week).
Henry Selick on the Coraline movie, "We will complete animation on Coraline in about six weeks and plan a February release of 2009."
Nicholas Cage has signed onto Matthew Vaughn’s Kick Ass movie.
Alex Proyas will write and direct, and Pheonix Pictures will produce, an adaptation of Robert Heinlein’s 1942 novella The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag. It’s about “a man who becomes increasingly disturbed when he realizes he cannot account for his activities during the day or even what he does for a living. He divulges his problem to the husband-and-wife partners of a private detective agency, and their investigation leads to a series of revelations they could never have imagined.”
New Regency has dropped the Voltron movie (the one that would turn the ‘80s cartoon into a story about five post apocalyptic alien attack survivors piloting lion robots in New York and Mexico) with Relativity Media in negotiations to pick it up. If it goes through, there will be a new director with a smaller budget, most likely by using 300-esque technology. Relativity would produce and then farm out distribution.
He-Man screenwriter Justin Marks: “The script is very true to the characters — we’re not talking about putting nipples on the Trapjaw suit. But we had to come up with a reason again why Trapjaw would actually not just be something that’s totally absurd, but why he would need those bionic parts added to him. Which gives a sort of sense of where [the movie] is going in some way.”
Fox Searchlight has put The Sweeney on hold. The movie based on the ‘70s British cult cop show was supposed to start filming in a couple weeks, with Ray Winstone and Michael Fassbender (he’s great, keep an eye on him) being considered for the leads. But Searchlight and DNA Films decided they needed bigger names in order to bring in audiences outside the UK. Nick Love remains attached to direct while they hope to get bigger names and go into production next year.
The Veronica Mars movie isn’t dead.

MGM Domestic Television Distribution has the option to possibly turn Howard Webster’s online graphic novel series The Many Worlds of Jonas Moore into a show. “The Many Worlds of Jonas Moore is a trilogy of second-generation graphic novels, which live online and are specifically designed for iPod and PC download. Set in a time where the British empire has never ended and America is just one of thousands of virtual worlds hosted on a vast global game network, the show centers on Moore (Colin Salmon), a virtual game character who becomes self-aware. Movie News
MGM has announced that they will release Bryan Singer’s suspense Valkyrie on December 26, 2008.
Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor’s science fiction movie Game, where futuristic video game players control actual people, will be delayed until 2009 due to visual effects. Producer Gary Lucchesi says he expects to announce a new release date soon.
A substantial amount of visual effects work has been awarded to Sony Pictures Imageworks for Roland Emmerich’s 2012.
Stone Village has acquired Dikran Ornekian and Ryan Colluci’s werewolf action thriller spec script Lobo. Ezna Sands will direct the movie about a man who goes to an isolated town in Brazil, after receiving some letters from his mother’s will, where he finds a group of werewolves and helps them fight for survival. It starts filming October 15 outside Rio de Janeiro.
J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot will produce an earthquake movie with Universal. Other than David Seltzer working on a script and the fact that it isn’t remake of the 1974 Earthquake, details are slim.
Mike Myers has joined the cast of Quentin Tarantino’s WWI movie Inglorious Bastards, while Simon Pegg has had to leave due to scheduling conflicts. Production starts October 13, in Germany.
Edgar Ramirez [rawr] will replace Javier Bardem in Joe Carnahan’s Pablo Escobar movie Killing Pablo.
Philip Noyce’s Edwin A. Salt will no longer star Tom Cruise, but Angelina Jolie. The spy thriller will also undergo a title change [duh], and be redrafted by Kurt Wimmer.
Prequels, Sequels & Remakes
Warner Brothers has announced that Harry Potter and the Half Blood Price’s release will be pushed back from November 21, 2008, to July 17, 2009. WB’s president Alan Horn: “We know the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent-pole release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest-grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment. Additionally, like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers' strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films--changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move Half-Blood Prince to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent-pole release for mid-summer." President of Warner's motion picture group Jeff Robinov: "The release date change does not alter the production schedule for this or future Harry Potter films. Post-production on Half-Blood Prince was completed on time, and the studio's release plans for the two-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will not be affected by this change. We know Harry Potter fans are eagerly anticipating seeing the final chapters unfold onscreen. In fact, the good news for them is that the gap will now be shortened between Half-Blood Prince and the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."
George Lucas says that the next Indiana Jones, if there is another one, will not focus on Shia Lebeouf’s character, “Indiana Jones is Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford IS Indiana Jones. If it was Mutt Williams it would be ‘Mutt Williams and the Search for Elvis’ or something.” As for Indy 5, “We ARE looking for something for him to go after. They are very hard to find. It’s like archeology. It takes a huge amount of research to come up with something that will fit.”
Lionsgate have hired Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain to rework the Conan script. They are still looking for a director.
Director P.J. Pesce says about Universal Soldier 3: "Unfortunately that has fallen apart. It's really too bad. We had a great script. But it just cratered - I don't know what's gonna happen." I weep.
Writer/Director John Singleton is in preproduction for Fight for Love. An unofficial sequel to 2001’s Baby Boy, the drama will reunite Tyrese Gibson and Taraji P. Henson as a struggling couple.
Adaptations
Summit Entertainment’s adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight will be moved from December 12, to November 21.
Universal is planning to release Chris Nahon’s Blood: The Last Vampire on 2,000 screens in March. Pathe has a June release listed for France.
Director Matthew Vaughn is moving forward on Kick-Ass. Chloe Moretz has been cast, with Christopher Mintz-Plasse in negotiations for the indie adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s ultraviolent teen superhero comic. The movie’s script was written by Vaughn with Jane Goldman, and they are looking at a possible fall start date.
Universal has the rights to Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, with Red Eagle Entertainment also producing. The adaptations will begin with The Eye of the World. The final book in the series is set for fall 2009 written by Brandon Sanderson using Jordan’s notes.
More on David Goyer’s Invisible Man: “My take is kind of an extrapolation. It actually deals with a nephew of the first character. It’s got some of the characters from the H.G. Wells book, but it’s kind of a continuation. It involves Scotland Yard getting their hands on the current Invisible Man and basically saying, ‘Wow, you’d be a really good secret agent to send into Imperial Russia right now. It starts off from there.”
George Clooney has bought the rights to Jonathan Mahler’s The Challenge. The legal thriller will be developed through Smoke House, leaving it open for Clooney to potentially direct, write, or star in, but nothing official yet. It’s about the legal battle between Charles Swift and Neal Katyal over the trial of Salim Hamdam, the bodyguard and driver of Osama bin Laden.
Zak Penn is writing, and will produce, Fox’s The Argonauts. It’s Penn’s take on the Greek myth about Jason and the sailors of the Argo, and their search for the Golden Fleece.

ABC has ordered a pilot for a TV adaptation of 1987’s The Witches of Eastwick, written by Maggie Friedman. It’ll be the third try for a series (Warner Brothers/NBC made an attempt in 1992, and Fox and WB in 2002).
SciFi Channel’s exec vice president of original programming Mark Stern says it is undecided whether Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica will be a movie or the pilot of a proposed series.

David Carradine and Darryl Hannah will star in Spike TV’s Kung Fu Killer. The two part miniseries, which premieres August 17 and 18, is set in 1920s China and “tells the story of White Crane (Carradine), an orphaned son of Western missionaries who was raised as a Wudang monk to become a spiritual leader and master in martial arts, and his ultimate journey for revenge and justice. Beginning in the Shanghai underworld, Crane encounters Jane Marshall (Hannah) a lounge singer from Brooklyn, who is on a mission of her own to find her lost brother.
Cartoon Network has announced that Robot Chicken will premiere Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II November 16 during the Adult Swim block. Carrie Fisher and Billy Dee Williams are onboard along with Ahmed Best, Seth MacFarlaine, Breckin Meyer, Conan O’Brien, and Donald Faison. Seth Green will direct, “We’re thrilled to get to make ‘Episode II;’ it doesn’t even seem real—getting to make ‘Star Wars’ twice! We’re so excited and bursting with joy.”

Movie News
After going back and forth over the NC-17, the MPAA has given Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno an R rating.
Eric Bana will make his directorial debut while playing himself in Australian movie Love the Beast. A journey about living life to the fullest, it revolves around Bana’s “Beast,” a 1974 Falcon Coupe. Madman Entertainment have the distribution rights.
Chris Thornton, Mark Ruffalo, and James Franco will star in Sympathy for Delicious. In it, a paralyzed DJ in L.A. turns to faith healing only to find out he can heal people other than himself. It’ll be Ruffalo’s directing debut and Thornton wrote the script. Shooting starts this fall and is fully financed by Corner Stone Entertainment.
Brad Pitt, Simon Pegg, BJ Novak, and Eli Roth are now signed on for Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards.
Walter F. Parkes, producer for The Trial of the Chicago 7, says that right now Steven Spielberg is no longer on the project, "No, he is not going to do it. He kind of had a moment of availability to do it, and the strike got in the way. We were unable to do the script work that Steven felt he needed and then, by the time the strike was over, he had already committed himself to to begin production on Tintin, which he's shooting along with (producer) Peter Jackson, and I guess it's in October or November. So, it's not inconceivable that he would come back, but for now, he's had to move on to Tintin, which is something that he's been working on for 20 years.''

Prequels, Sequels & Remakes
Nikolaj Arcel will direct, and Jennifer O’Kieffe will write, Universal’s Island of Lost Souls, an American remake of Danish supernatural action adventure De fortabte sjaeles. The original, also directed by Arcel, is about a teenager who becomes important in a battle between good and evil when her younger brother becomes possessed by an 18th century magician.
Sony has hired Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to write the remake of Flash Gordon.
Platinum Dunes’ Brad Fuller on The Birds remake: “We're working that out now but there's only so much that can happen. Birds attack. It's the explaining of why is it happening or if you explain why it's happening or who are the characters that it's happening to and the setting that it's happening in. Those are the things that we're contending with now. We're in the very early process on that, very early. The movie is a lot about the filmmaker. Martin Campbell is a guy, Casino Royale could be my favorite movie. I love that movie. I thought that he did an amazing job but that is the first true filmmaker who we've had an opportunity to sit down and really work with a guy who knows what he's talking about, is very passionate about the movie, has some fantastic ideas about what he wants that movie to be and with a guy like that, you just want to follow him up the mountain and do what he says.”
The Japanese release date for the second movie in Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys live action trilogy January 31, with the third coming fall 2009.

Adaptations
Disney has the rights to, and Kickstart Entertainment will also produce, Monster Attack Network. Marc Bernardin, Adam Freeman, and Nima Sorat’s adventure graphic novel is about the giant monster populated island of Lapuatu, and team who must handle rampages and clean up related messes.
Paramount Pictures and Plan b have the rights to Mark Crilley’s world manga Miki Falls. Sera Gamble will adapt the high school story of student Miki Yoshida’s attempts to connect with a mysterious transfer student during their senior year.
Hiroyuki Murata’s high school comedy manga Kogyoaika Volleyboys will be made into a live action movie. Three students nicknamed the Numa-Kō 3 Baka Trio (The Asanuma Technical High School Idiot Trio) star a volleyball team in an attempt to become popular.
Oren Segal has optioned Lisa Lerner’s science fiction novel Just Like Beauty. Nick Pustay will adapt the dark comedy about beauty pageant contestant in a dystopian future with blowtorch gangs, mutant grasshoppers, and a suicide cult.
Max Thierot will star in Chuck Russell’s science fiction action Prodigy. Adapted by Dave Kalstein from his novel, it’s about two students who reluctantly join forces to uncover the conspiracy at thier elite boarding school where pharmaceuticals are used to produce future world leaders. Principal photography starts October in Spain.
Colin Firth, Ben Barnes, Rebecca Hall, Ben Chaplin, Emilia Fox, Rachel Hurd-Wood, Fiona Shaw, Maryam D'Abo, Pip Torrens, Douglas Henshall, Caroline Goodall, Michael Culkin, Johnny Harris, Max Irons have been cast in Oliver Parker’s Dorian. Based on Oscar Wilde’s supernatural novel, it will release in the UK in 2009.
Roger Avary is working on a script for a proposed movie based on video game Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Todd Hollenshead says, "I've recently been in contact with Roger, and he's actually working on the script right now." … "I think that from a progress standpoint, it's probably gone a little bit slower than what we would have expected--you can't control these strikes and so on."
Samuel L. Jackson on the plan for the live action Afro Samurai, "I'll be the dead father. I'll show up in some spiritual scenes, and give him some guidance. We'll find some young guy that is capable of doing all those things and make it really cool. When look at [Afro], I see André 3000." There is still no finalized script.

Sci Fi Channel has ordered five 30 minute episodes for Russell Barrett’s comedy Outer Space Astonauts (working title). “In the future, many courageous souls journey to the far reaches of the galaxy, seeking knowledge, adventure and the thrill of exploration. The rest are the Outer Space Astronauts. The slovenly Captain Ripley commands the "space-ially" challenged crew of the O.S.S. Oklahoma as they go about their daily routine of working in space.” It’ll be a mix of live action, 3-D, and 2-D animation.

The creator of HBO’s True Blood vampire drama, Alan Ball: "In our world, a lot of the myths about vampires were created by vampires themselves over history so that they could pass, because if you could convince everyone that you couldn't be seen in a mirror or that you would freak out if somebody shoved a crucifix in your face then you could prove you weren't a vampire pretty easily." Ball also said that he’s not a big fan of vampire movies, etc., but is a big fan of Near Dark. "I wanted it to be a show about characters and to really explore what it means to be 170 years old and what it means to fall in love with somebody who [finds it] satisfying being fed upon, you know, not being able to see this person except at night, having the entire town think, 'What? Are you crazy?'" The twelve episode first season of the show based on Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire book series premieres September 7.
Spike TV has announced that Lucy Liu and Mark Hamill will join Samuel L. Jackson and Yuri Lowenthal on the voice cast for the TV movie sequel to Afro Samurai, Afro Samurai: Resurrection, premiering January 2009. Liu will play a seductive nemesis, and Hamill will Sio’s manservant Bin.
Joss Whedon is shooting another first episode for Dollhouse, and will make the now first episode the second, "It definitely has to do with the network and what I presented to them," Whedon admitted in an interview at Comic-Con International in San Diego over the weekend. "It was one of those situations where we were all very enthusiastic about the world we were building, but they loved the pilot when they read it, and then they saw it and they said, 'OK, this feels a little different than we thought it was going to.' I began to suspect that they wanted something from the first episode that that episode didn't have. They [were] sort of wishy-washy about it, and I don't say this against them, because what they were trying to do was not rock my boat. So I was like, 'I think I can give them exactly what they want. It will make the show better, because everything I do in this episode will only have more resonance.'" He also said that the new episode was his idea. There will also be 13 webisodes. Dollhouse premieres January 2009.

Movie News
Columbia Pictures has hired Walt Becker to direct Stealing Time. The time travel actioner is about a worldwide search to unravel the mysteries of the Antikythera Mechanism, which may make time travel possible. Colin Trevorrow is writing the script. Films in August.
Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson’s superhero pitch has been bought by Disney and will be produced with Sam Raimi’s Stars Road Entertainment. While the details for the action adventure are being kept under wraps, it’s been described as “a four-quadrant ensemble superhero story with a comedic bent.”
John Carpenter and Nicolas Cage are final negotiations for prison thriller Scared Straight. Cage would play a lifer who must help a delinquent teen, who is part of the Scared Straight crime prevention program (sending troubled kids to prison for short stint to put the fear in 'em), when the teen ends up being held hostage after a riot breaks out.
Stereo Vision Entertainment announced 3D comedy Kung Fu U starring Hulk Hogan and Kimbo Slice. “’Kung Fu U’ in 3D is a Disney-type comedy about of a bunch of nerds and misfits that are sent away by their wealthy parents to the Brentwood Academy (a.k.a. Kung Fu U) to learn the finer arts of self-defense. It’s a heart-warming romp where the rather weathered warriors come to the rescue for the kids, and in turn, the kids rescue the warriors’ seemingly lost souls from what had been their eternal apathy. It’s a feel-good story that reminds us that we’re all the same, no matter what our age, or where we came from, and that we should all stick together.” They’re looking at a fall 2009 release.
Prequels, Sequels & Remakes
Lou Adler, BermanBraun, and Fox Television Studios will be making a two hour long new version of Rocky Horror Picture Show. While it’ll use the original’s screenplay, there may be new music included.
MGM is developing a Valley Girl musical that will use the original’s story and an ‘80s soundtrack. Sean Bailey is producing via Idealogy Inc.
Wes Craven on the People Under the Stairs remake: "It will be a remake, not directed by me, but something Marianne Maddalena will produce after she completes The Last House on the Left"
Guillermo del Toro and Miramax are producing, and Troy Nixey will make his feature directorial debut on, a remake of horror-thriller Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. The 1973 TV movie about a girl who goes to live with her father and his girlfriend and finds creatures living under the stairs, will be updated by del Toro and Matthew Robins. It’s in the very early stages.
Red Sonja is moving forward with Robert Rodriguez presenting, Douglas Aarniokoski directing, Rose McGowan starring, and David White writing.
Atlantia Canarias, Branko Lustig, and John Kelly will be producing a remake of 1973 Steve McQueen vehicle Papillon. Based off Henri Charriere’s autobiography, it’s about a petty criminal named Papillon who tries to escape when he is wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to life in a French penal colony in Guiane.
New Line/Warner Brothers has hired Wesley Strick to write a “relaunch” of A Nightmare on Elm Street
Darren Aronofsky is officially signed to direct RoboCop, David Self will write, the story will take place twenty years after the original, and it is fast tracked for 2010. Producer Mike Medavoy on the rating, “It’s likely to be an R unless the director cuts back on some of it.”
Michael Brandt and Derek Haas have been hired as writers for Beverly Hills Cop 4.
Sam Raimi on a possible Evil Dead 4: "That's in the wheelhouse. I'd like to work on it with my brother Ivan when he comes up next week."
Sam Raimi says Spider-Man 4 is in the early stage, "I'm going to be a producer on it, and I'm waiting to see the script." The movie is already slated for 2011.
Sony has commissioned Jacob Estes to draft a script for a spin off from Spider-Man with Venom.
