Prequels, Sequels & Remakes

Guillermo del Toro is in talks with New Line and MGM to direct two simultaneously filmed The Hobbit movies.
(Excuse me a moment *squiee!*)
After working out his differences with New Line, Peter Jackson has signed on as “executive producer with creative control” (currently he’s busy with The Lovely Bones and Tintin). Each movie has a budget of $150 million and will film in 2009, with release dates for 2010 and ’11. If del Toro takes the gig it may impact his drama/horror movie 3993. (Submitted by Justin)

Jimmy Bennett has been cast as the young James Kirk in Star Trek XI. Also, according to new Chekov Anton Yelchin, it seems the actors have been signed for three picture deals.

Platinum Dunes have set their sites on another classic horror movie to remake/reboot: Nightmare On Elm Street. Robert Englund is supposed to be approached about reprising the role of Freddy. *sigh*

Talks are almost complete between Paramount, Matt Reeves, JJ Abrams, and Drew Goddard concerning Cloverfield 2.

Rambo 5 is already starting its early stages.

UPDATED: Mark Romanek has left The Wolf Man remake over “creative differences.” Joe Johnston has been hired as the new director, and filming will start in March as Scheduled.

William H. Macy has confirmed that he is still attached to Stuart Gordon's fourth Re-Animator movie.

John Cleese will be Dr. Barnhardt in The Day the Earth Stood Still remake.

Saw 5 should be shooting in April. Production Charts list it as having Tobin Bell, Scott Patterson, and Costas Mandylor.

Peter Gallagher and Ethan Stiefel will be back for the Steven Jacobson directed Center Stage sequel. Rachel Smith will play determined dancer Kate, Kenny Wormland will be her partner Tommy, and Sarah Jane Jensen as jealous Suzanne.

Boogeyman 3 films this month, and will probably go straight to DVD like 2. The story this time: Supernatural hijinks start after Sarah sees her roommate’s supposed suicide, and she must convince fellow dorn residents of the existence of the Boogeyman.

I usually don’t do rumors and unconfirmed things (actually it’s kind of a rule. Don’t tell Justin! Shh!), but Jason Statham has said in an interview that there are talks of a The Crow remake. *siiiiigh*

Wait, two Hobbit movies? I'm confused. Are they dividing the story up into two parts? How can they justify that?

Justified or not, that's how it's looking. Which means probably a whole year inbetween releases too, just like Lord of the Rings. I wonder where they plan on breaking up the story?
